The Grateful Dead

Anthem of the Sun is a still, to my ears at least, a groundbreaking album. With no gaps between tracks, electronic sounds mix with layer upon layer of sections from various live concerts and studio sessions. It was a huge task for the Dead to take on and the length it time it took tried the patience of Warner Bros. The initial release unfortunately suffered from a somewhat murky sound and Jerry took it upon himself to review the production and released a much crisper sounding version a couple of years later.

It was reported in Scott Freeman's book Midnight Riders: The Story of the Allman Brothers Band that Duane first played "Mountain Jam" one night while sitting in with the Grateful Dead (p. 123). The melodic strains of Donovan's "There Is a Mountain" can clearly be heard right at the 09:00 minute mark on the Anthem of the Sun version of "Alligator".

For a flavour of what these psychedelic pioneers could do, here's some fine live tracks , 3 from the Dead's classic era, the wonderful Bird Song from 12/Nov/1988 and 2 from Jerry's own band.
